BadgerCare was created in the 1990s as a way of ensuring working people access to affordable health insurance when their income disqualified them for Medicaid. It works to minimize the effects the growing gap between the “haves” (often those with access to good health insurance) and the “have nots” (those without health insurance). Go to change.org to sign the on-line petition asking the Dept. of Health Services to preserve BadgerCare and avoid making changes in this program. — Pastor Marianne

(Message below from Save BadgerCare Coalition)

Send a message to Wisconsin leaders today – Protect & Save BadgerCare!

Wisconsin’s Medicaid deficit is now expected to be $322 million less than was anticipated a few months ago, and the state has just received a $24 million federal bonus for BadgerCare’s success. Those developments enable the state to protect BadgerCare, while also lifting the cap on the Family Care program.

Please join us in fighting to preserve BadgerCare and to oppose changes that would adversely affect children, people with disabilities, and adults, and would result in thousands of families becoming uninsured.

Add your name to our new Save BadgerCare Coalition petition being sent to Governor Walker, DHS Secretary Smith and Joint Finance Committee Co-Chairs – Senator Darling and Representative Vos.

http://www.change.org/petitions/save-badgercare-2

Thank you!

Thank you for supporting BadgerCare and Medicaid. Be sure to forward this email to others letting them know that MEDICAID MATTERS! For more information and to join the Save BadgerCare Coalition, visit: www.savebadgercare.org.

Leaders of the WI faith community have requested meetings with Governor Walker’s office to discuss how the budget repair bill and budget cuts will affect our communities. The Governor’s office has not yet responded. Until a meeting is scheduled, several faith leaders have committed to sit in front of his office studying religious texts related to justice. This effort is being led by the Interfaith Coalition for Worker Justice and MUM (Madison Urban Ministry).

A note from Wisconsin’s UM Conference:

The following letter was sent to Governor Walker. The hope is that all United Methodists in Wisconsin will pray about this issue and contact Governor Walker as well as their elected state representatives to let them know their opinions.

Download (PDF): Bishop Lee’s Letter to Gov. Walker

Copied below:

February 16, 2011
Office of Governor Scott Walker
115 East Capitol
Madison WI 53702

Dear Governor Walker:

It was my great honor to meet you and participate in your prayer breakfast on the day of your inauguration. Thank you for the invitation. I continue to pray for you and your administration.

However, today I have a concern. United Methodists state in our 2008 Book of Discipline the following:

“We support the right of all public and private employees and employers to organize for collective bargaining into unions and other groups of their own choosing. Further, we support the right of both parties to protection in so doing and their responsibility to bargain in good faith within the framework of the public interest. In order that the rights of all members of the society may be maintained and promoted, we support innovative bargaining procedures that include representatives of the public interest in negotiation and settlement of labor-management contracts, including some that may lead to forms of judicial resolution of issues. We reject the use of violence by either party during collective bargaining or any labor/management disagreement. We likewise reject the permanent replacement of a worker who engages in a lawful strike.”

I share this with you because I understand the importance of balancing our state budget while continuing to provide the best services possible to our citizens. But because of my belief that far more is accomplished for the best interests of all those we serve when employers and employees work together, I am writing to ask you to reconsider your initiative which I believe would end the possibility for those who are government employees here in Wisconsin to negotiate settlement of labor and management disagreements.

Our scriptures teach us that in Christ there is no north or south, no east or west, no slave or free. Is there not another way to accomplish what is needed? Thank you for your consideration of this matter.

In Christ,
Bishop Linda Lee
